£90m site for terror cops

October 21, 2007

Police are calling for a £90million weapons training centre for officers to combat the rise in terror plots facing UK.

A Metropolitan Police report also warns if a site is not found soon terror targets - such as Heathrow - could be at risk.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has been asked for the money by police chiefs, who claim they do not have the space to cope with the extra officers who need firearms training.

The Met is using MoD land at RAF Uxbridge, in North West London, as a base - but this will end next year. It is estimated an extra 40,000 training days will be required every year by 2012.

The report warns failure to get a new centre could mean "security operations may be compromised".
