Protest day observed

By our correspondent | Karachi | July 15, 2007

Various Islamic organisations and seminaries staged protest demonstrations and held meetings on Friday to observe the day of protest against the massive use of military force and killings in Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa operation.

Speakers at various protest meetings and demonstrations seriously castigated the government policy of launching forceful blitz against the Jamia Hafsa and Lal Masjid people at a time when the mediation efforts of leading religious scholars of the country were nearing to end the deadlock through negotiations.

Maulana Wali Khan, a senior office-bearer of Wafaq-ul-Madaris Sindh, said that people associated with the local Madaris carried out peaceful protest rallies to express their indignation against the killings in the military operation.

Central secretary-general of JI said that the Gen Musharraf-led government had unduly used and exploited the armed forces to unleash blatant terror and violence against the Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa students.

Former senior NWFP minister Sirajul Haq, who is JI Amir of the Frontier Province, said that the launching of military operation had caused serious distrust and hatred among the public against the role and objective functioning of the armed forces. MMA Parliamentary leader in Sindh Assembly Maulana Umer Sadiq said the government of Gen Pervez Musharraf had become ‘extremist’ and ‘fascist’ in its drive to perpetuate its illegal and anti-Islamic rule in the country.
