The people listed here were all arrested and held pending further charges.

On 22 August, 2006 The CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) announced that the following were charged:

Ahmed Abdullah Ali, Tanvir Hussain, Umar Islam (also known as Brian Young), Arafat Waheed Khan, Assad Ali Sarwar, Adam Khatib, Ibrahim Savant and Waheed Zaman.

The charges came shortly after the woman charged -- Cossar Ali -- launched a legal bid at London's High Court to have her detention ruled unlawful. Her lawyer told judges she had been charged at the start of proceedings.

The head of the CPS's counter-terrorism division, Susan Hemming, said the charges had been laid "at the earliest practicable opportunity" after she had personally sized up the evidence against each individual.

"Eight individuals have been charged with two offences relating to an alleged plot to manufacture and smuggle the component parts of improvised explosive devices onto aircraft and assemble and detonate them on board," she told reporters in central London.

"Those individuals have been charged with conspiracy to murder and the new offence of preparing acts of terrorism contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006," she said.

Of the three others, "one has been charged with possession of articles useful to a person preparing an act of terrorism and two with failing to disclose information of material assistance in preventing an act of terrorism.

"One woman has been released from custody without charge."

Sources said Rashid Rauf was father of Tayyab Rauf, a suspect who was arrested in United Kingdom last year in connection with 7/7 London train blasts.

Rashid Rauf was arrested in the city of Bahawalpur in southern Punjab state. Mr. Rauf, a brother of one of the suspects arrested in England, has been described in some media reports as having connections to Al Qaeda and the Pakistani militant group Jaish-e-Muhammed (based in Bahawalpur), and is believed to have been in Pakistan to raise funds and to consort with other militants in plotting the scheme.

His father, Abdul Rauf, a businessman, 52, is being questioned by Pakistani security services over his involvement with a charity he helped found.

A swirl of attention has focused on the role that the brothers Rashid and Tayib Rauf may have played in the airliner plot. Their father, Abdul Rauf, immigrated to Britain from the Mirpur district of Pakistan several decades ago, and his five children were all born in Britain, the family said.

Rashid Rauf was arrested about a week ago along the Pakistan-Afghan border, and Pakistani officials have characterized him as a "key person" in the airline plot. They said evidence linked him to an "Afghanistan-based al-Qaida connection" but gave no details.

His 22-year-old brother, Tayib, was taken into custody in Britain during the sweeps that nabbed 24 people here, and unconfirmed reports said a third brother might have been detained.

The Rauf family is thought to be of Kashmiri origin. Rashid Rauf left the UK in 2002 after his uncle was stabbed to death. He was wanted for questioning regarding the killing. The family home in Birmingham has also been previously searched by police following the stabbing of a black IT worker in the area. Rauf is thought to be an explosives expert who trained members of the British bomb team in Pakistan, as well as many other young men passing through Islamic camps.
