Another cop in Rashid Rauf escape case gets bail

The Islamabad High Court on Friday accepted bail plea of a constable alleged to have shown negligence and facilitated escape of Rashid Rauf, an accused in a conspiracy to blow up a transatlantic aircraft in UK.

A single bench of IHC Chief Justice Sardar Mohammad Asalm heard the bail application of constable Nawabzada.

Malik Wahid Anjum, counsel for the petitioner, argued in the court that neither the constable had any relations with the absconder nor the situation bore witness to his involvement.

He said that the alleged criminal escaped from the scene without any facilitation by the accompanying police personnel.

The chief justice granted bail on a surety bond of Rs50,000. The same bench on May 6 had also accepted bail plea of another accused, head constable Mohammad Tufail.

Rashid Rauf, wanted by the UK for a conspiracy to blow up aircraft in London, had escaped from police custody on December 15, 2007 when he was brought to Islamabad District Courts from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

The bench also accepted a writ petition of a female teacher for the regularisation of her contract service.

ISLAMABAD (APP): Islamabad High Court on Tuesday accepted bail plea of a head constable, arrested for showing negligence and facilitating Rashid Rauf, an accused one in conspiracy to blow up an aircraft in UK, to escape. Single Bench of Chief Justice Sardar Mohammad Asalm heard the bail application of head constable Mohammad Tufail. Sabah Moeenudin advocate, counsel for the pleader, apprised the court that the provisions in the case did not advocate his confinement. He argued that neither he had any relations with the absconder nor the situation bore witness to his involvement. He said the situation showed that alleged criminal escaped from the scene without any facilitation by the accompanying police personnel. After accepting his arguments, Chief Justice granted bail to Mohammed Tufail on a surety bond of Rs 100,000.
