LETTER : Nukes in good hands

October 8, 2007

“WTF” is correct. [“WTF, Air Force? How the flyboys mistakenly took live nukes on a plane ride,” Sept. 17]. WTF is all the fuss over a B-52 transporting some nukes from Minot to Barksdale [Air Force bases]?

Does anyone remember the Strategic Air Command? How many thousands of aircraft hours did the Air Force log with bombers in the air 24/7 with nukes on board, ready to strike at an enemy within a moment’s notice? We were glad they were there.

You can rest assured that those weapons did not have near the safety features that today’s weapons have. Even if this was a mix-up, I am reassured that we still know how to load nukes if needed.

I’d much rather have these warheads onboard an Air Force B-52 than in the back of some 18-wheeler.

It is also reassuring that they were being handled by professionals.
