British Airways reveals costs after foiled airborne terror plot
September 6, 2006
LONDON The plot to blow up airliners was thwarted before it could succeed -- but Britain's signature carrier says it's lost tens of (m) millions of dollars in the security fallout.
British Airways says an extra 76 (m) million dollars in expenses came in part from revenues lost to the cancellation of nearly 13-hundred flights. And the airline also had to shell out for hotels, catering and baggage movements for the passengers whose flights were scrubbed.
Even so, the airline says passenger bookings climbed last month compared with last year. But it's still weaker than had been expected.
The airline blames new limitations on carry-on baggage, which still ban all liquids, including toiletries, from flights that originate in London.
