Plane terror suspects held in custody

September 5, 2006

EIGHT men have been remanded in custody after appearing at the Old Bailey in connection with the alleged plot to blow up transatlantic airliners.

The men, aged 19 to 28, appeared by videolink, charged with conspiracy to murder and preparing an act of terrorism.

Tanvir Hussain, of no fixed address; Umar Islam, of east London; Arafat Waheed Khan, from Walthamstow, east London; Ahmed Abdullah Ali, from Walthamstow; Ibrahim Savant, from north London; Waheed Zaman, from Walthamstow; Assad Ali Sarwar, from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire; and Adam Khatib, from Walthamstow, were all remanded in custody for two weeks.

It is alleged they were preparing to smuggle the component parts of improvised explosive devices on to aircraft and assemble and detonate them on board.

The eight were among 24 people arrested in an operation launched last month.

The judge agreed to adjourn the case after hearing that three other defendants are due to appear at the Old Bailey facing the same charges on September 18.
