Terror plot suspect on conspiracy charge

September 6, 2006

DETECTIVES investigating an alleged plot to blow up transatlantic airliners have charged a Barking man.

Mohammed Yazar Gulzar, 25, will appear at the Old Bailey on September 18 accused of conspiracy to murder.

Eleven other men, all from Waltham Forest and High Wycombe, appeared at the court via a video link from Belmarsh Prison on Monday. They spoke only to confirm their names and were remanded in custody. Two other men, one from Stoke Newington and one from Chingford, will appear alongside Gulzar later this month.

All were arrested in a series of high profile police raids on August 10. A total of 69 houses, flats, cars and businesses were searched by detectives in one of the biggest anti-terrorist operations ever seen in Britain.

A terraced house near Barking Town Centre was stormed by around 20 officers and a man was arrested. The POST cannot name the street for legal reasons.

Prosecutor Colin Gibbs told the Old Bailey that the case against the 11 men could take so long to prepare that they might not face trial until Easter 2008.
